EL CARMEN LOCAL MUSEUM
Description
Originally, this museum was an old rural school built in 1900, and it stands as a paradigmatic example of what the hygiene movement gave to public buildings at that time: from that moment, big windows and high ceilings dominate the basic structure of the new built schools.
Today this building works as a local museum, and two permanent collections are exhibited inside.
Downstairs you can see an interesting Ordovician period collection of fossils, with original ones found in Ribadesella’s district a few years ago. Trilobite arthropods are the stars in here, just as they went 450 million years before, when current continents were still forming, and life was exclusively a question of oceanic water and submarine environment.
On the other hand, a local history exhibition is showed upstairs. The works of Jesus Delgado, a pioneer of documental photography, reveal ordinary people routines and traditional works from the beginning of 20th century.
Further, some detailed mock-ups by Ángel Delgado, a brilliant model maker, represent lost symbolic buildings of the local past (If you are a lover of scale reproductions and navigation, ask for the navy models collection kept there).
To finish, some pictures of mansions and some original drawings by Miguel García-Lomas, the Indianos’ favourite architect, are displayed on this area.
To get to El Carmen museum you have to head up the first turn to the left on the N-632 road and then drive 4 km to the west along El Carmen road.
