Castru arenes cliffs and picnic area – the bufones
Description
Castru Arenes picnic area is a vast nude surface at the top of a magnificent calcareous platform, actually a privileged viewpoint to look over the Cantabrian Sea. El Cuera Mountains behind you, and the beautiful Guadamia beach, deep on your right, complete this unforgettable scene. Looking to the east side, separated from you by the gorge at the mouth of Guadamía stream, you have the massive and highly dramatic cliffs where the Bufones get active.
Bufones are just part of a coastal karst massif exposed to the action of sea tides. When high tides are strong enough, sudden sea waters inundate the caves and sinkholes of the massif. Then, this extremely pressured sea water is strongly thrown out and spectacularly projected up in the air several meters high. This phenomenon is attended by an intense loud sound at the exterior mouth of the caves and holes. That’s why, traditionally it was said that these narrow caves were a kind of snorting holes, the Spanish meaning for the word ‘Bufones’.
To get to Castru Arenes area, drive east from Ribadesella to Cuerres village along AS-263 road. Passed 6 km you’ll find a signposted turning point on your left that leads to Cuerres. Before entering the village, the first signs to get to Castru Arenes picnic area and cliffs are already displayed.
