Santa maría de xuncu romanesque church
Description
Xuncu village is the outstanding location of this rural stone church, at 5 km from Ribadesella. It offers a whole view over the estuary of the Sella River, and the Escapa mountains, with Mofrechu Peak as the highest summit in the district, soaring 891 m.
Santa María de Xuncu is a 13th century Romanesque church that was exposed to consecutive remodelling in 16th and 18th centuries. Partially destroyed during the Civil War, it was finally restored in 1980. Its structure is quite simple with a unique nave and a semicircular chancel. At the exterior, interesting Romanesque carved motives can be seen beneath the eaves. And on the apse’s wall, a small embrasure window is ornate by two columns crowned with delicate birdshaped capitals. Above the main door a nobility blazon from the Renaissance is carved. Yet, inside, a triumphal arch with archivolts, columns and beastshaped capitals presents the chancel, where still a few remains of erased original fresh-paintings can be recognised.
To get to Santa María de Xuncu church you have to start driving south along Tito Bustillo Cave’s road. Leaving behind you Sardalla village, always on the road to Tezangos village, you’ll find a signposted turning point on your left to drive up to Xuncu, where the church stands.
