RULA

" Rula" is the system of auction in which a given price will decline or change, for example 50 to 50 cents, until it is stopped by a buyer interested in the price or a disinterested seller .

That is why the Fish Market House and other units of the Virgin of Guía Fishermen buildings, are called  Rula.

"The court is where catches are set for auction. There is a balcony, on the court were seats, table and a panel are located.

A purchaser has an assigned seat with number and a bell. The table has 50 numbers which represents the different seats.

Rula´s table, in a circular shape, contains 50 numbered holes with a ball inside. So when the auction buyer stops by pressing the bell, suddently the panel highlights the number and the table rolls the ball to the hole. If several buyers push at a time, the number of each of them stand out in the panel. But Rula´s table only rolls a ball in the hole with the number of the winning bidder .

 
 
 

History

The history and development of Ribadesella has always been linked to the Fisherman since prehistoric times. For the archaeological remains found in the cave of Tito Bustillo we can say that fishing was one of the main economic resources of the council.

The Guild of Merchants, existed since the Middle Ages, a period in which rowing boats cought whales and salmon with nets from boats.

It was in the late nineteenth century, after the first expansion of the urban land, where Ribadesella´s fishing port lived its peak. Fishing shelter for bad weather and an excellent selling point for the fish, which also held a major industry of canned and cured.

Fishing gear

Artisanal fishing is forRibadesella an important economic and social activity since centuries. Currently the methods of fishing are conceptually the same as in the past. But  transformed the way in practical application through technology.  So recent decades have a progress concerning at the service of fishermen. Ribadesella´s  fishing gear used by sailor centuries along are: bottom Longline, Mesh, Chinchorra, Ceazu and fish trap.
