This 300 m long cavern is the only access the picturesque Cueves del Agua village has ever had. Its enormous gallery is the ancient course of Cueves stream whose modest waters are still visible running beside the road. Dramatically lighted with distant lightning points the different cave formations inside –stalactites, stalagmites, columns- create a strongly moving atmosphere that will make your experience an unforgettable perception of ground and nature. Actually, Cueves del Agua Cuevona is one of the most visited sites in the region.
A parking is devised for your car on the left side of the road, before getting inside this natural tunnel. But, in low season time you can drive along. Then, it seems that your car is being gobbled down by the ground, unexpectedly rolling in the interior of an impressive cavern. Even if this Cuevona is lightened, using a torch or wearing a light-coloured garment is recommended if you cross it walking.
To get from Ribadesella to Cueves del Agua village you have to drive 7 km to the south. Start going over Tito Bustillo Cave's road. On your trip you’ll have to leave Sardalla village and Tezangos village behind. Past Tezangos village, at the crossroads under the huge A-8 highway viaduct, you’ll just have to continue to the left to get to Cueves del Agua Cuevona.
Finally, Cueves del Agua village is the starting point of The Mills Route, a charming hiking path through a native trees forest where you will find abandoned structures of ancient watermills, usually used to grind corn.
