San salvador de moru romanesque church
Beschreibung
San Salvador de Moru is a modest 13th century construction in Romanesque style that was burned in 1936, during the Civil War. In the burning, the wooden roof of the unique nave collapsed, but not the pointed vault of its chancel that was built in stone. And so, the fire extremely heated the chancel’s ceiling and at some spots its lime cover got detached. And amazingly, never seen before unexpected paintings appeared there.
Fortunately, today these unknown Renaissance paintings and the whole church are under restoration, and three magnificent scenes from the Evangels -hidden for centuries- can already be enjoyed: a colossal ‘Last Supper’, the ‘Pray at the Gethsemane Garden’, and the ‘Kiss of Judas and arrest of Jesus’. Presumably, almost a 90% of the old decorated murals will be able to be recovered in a near future.
Finally, some 13th century carved elements of San Salvador de Moru at the Archaeological Museum of Asturias since the 50s decade.
To get to San Salvador de Moru you’ll have to drive 7 km south from Ribadesella to Noceu village. You will start heading the Tito Bustillo Cave road on the western side of the Sella river. On your trip you’ll have to leave Sardalla and Tezangos villages behind, to get to a crossroads under the A-8 highway viaduct. There, the road on your right leads to Noceu village where specific signposts show the way to the picturesque site of Moru.
